Malcolm earned his undergrad degree in business at York University, was an Ivey Scholar at Western University, and graduated with his MBA from the Ivey School of Business in 1994. He also holds the CPA, CMA and CIM (Chartered Investment Manager) designations. 

He was General Manager of Microsoft, during its start-up years in Canada. In his last corporate role, he grew a small Canadian technology startup into an international business operating in 17 countries. Malcolm retired from corporate life in 2006 when a European private-equity group acquired the company. Since then he’s been involved in 14 startups, held senior advisory roles at VentureLab and the Business Advisory Centre in Durham and worked with over a hundred owner-managed businesses.

He teaches entrepreneurship, finance, accounting and management in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology. Malcolm founded the Spark Angel Investment Network in 2012 and remains its Executive Director. The Spark Angels are the Durham-Northumberland region’s source of private equity, growth capital for innovative, scalable businesses. In the last 7 years, they’ve invested $10.8 million in 68 companies and had 3 exits (two of which went public).
