Research accomplishments and distinctions
The Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT) is proud of its diverse and innovative faculty members who challenge and inspire students to push their own boundaries of thinking and learning.
These are just a few of the many successes within our faculty that have contributed to a great number of awards, publications, and a remarkable amount of overall funding received since our inception in 2003.
Our faculty members are experts in their fields. Their numerous accomplishments have brought much recognition to our faculty. Here we share just a small selection of some of our faculty achievements.
Amirali Abari, PhD
Dr. Abari’s postgraduate research has been awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships and fellowships, including: the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship (NSERC PDF), NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship, Ontario Graduate Scholarship, Queen Elizabeth II and Bell Scholarship. His research also won a student best paper award (IEEE PST 2010), has been granted a U.S. patent and has been featured on the Rogers TV show Durham Now.
Shahram Heydari, PhD
Dr. Heydari is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), co-director of the university’s Advanced Networking Technology and Security (ANTS) Lab and member of the university's METIS security research group.
Andrew Hogue, PhD
Dr. Hogue is Principal Investigator in the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC)-funded iGO3D project exploring stereoscopic 3D design techniques and human perception for S3D games. He is also primary researcher on the fully-funded pilot game-development project with the Certified General Accountants of Ontario (CGA), investigating the use of serious game technology to make business education more effective.
Patrick Hung, PhD
Dr. Hung works with Boeing Research and Technology in Seattle, Washington on aviation services-related research projects. He has two U.S. patents on the Mobile Network Dynamic Workflow Exception Handling System with Boeing in the U.S. He currently works with the College of Technological Innovation at Zayed University on several smart city and cybersecurity research projects in the United Arab Emirates. He is also a Visiting Researcher at the University of São Paulo, Brazil and National Technological University (UTN) in Santa Fe, Argentina.
Bill Kapralos, PhD
Dr. Kapralos is a recipient of an IBM Centers for Advanced Studies Faculty Award, and co-recipient of a Google Faculty Award. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at York University in Toronto, Canada, and a Guest Professor at Shizuoka University in Hamamatsu, Japan.
Igor Kotlyar, PhD
Dr. Kotlyar founded two technology companies prior to joining FBIT. One of his companies developed simulation-based software for training, selection and recruitment of employees. It was the first company in the world to build an online video simulation assessment, and was widely covered by the media for its innovation.
Karolina Krystyniak, PhD
Dr. Krystyniak is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute charterholder. Before her academic career, she worked at many top international consulting companies.
Xiaodong Lin, PhD
Dr. Lin won the Best Paper Award at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Turing 50th Celebration Conference in Shanghai, China with Master of Information Technology Security student Nathan Scrivens.
Fletcher Lu, PhD
Dr. Lu has collaborated with industry and government partners, including the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Manulife Financial, the Canadian Department of National Defence and Medavie Blue Cross.
Stephen Marsh, PhD
Dr. Marsh is an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Brunswick (Computer Science) and Adjunct Professor at Carleton University, Ottawa (Systems and Computer Engineering and Cognitive Science). He was also the Canadian delegate to the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Technical Committee 11: Security and Privacy Protection in Information Processing Systems.
Carolyn McGregor, PhD
Dr. McGregor is the Canadian representative for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) and inaugural IEEE EMBS representative for IEEE Women in Engineering. She was the Canada Research Chair in Health Informatics at the University of Ontarion Institute of Technology from 2007 to 2017, leading pioneering research in Big Data analytics, real-time stream processing, temporal data mining, patient journey modelling and cloud computing. She now progresses this research within the context of critical-care medicine, mental health, astronaut health and military and civilian tactical training.
Richard Pazzi, PhD
Dr. Pazzi is Program Co-Chair of the ACM International Symposium on Design and Analysis of Intelligent Vehicular Networks and Applications (2011); Program Co-Chair of the ACM International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks (2011-2012); Reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Elsevier's Computer Networks and Elsevier's Journal of Parallel and Distributing Computing; and Technical Program Committee member in a number of IEEE/ACM international conferences.
Miguel Vargas Martin, PhD
Dr. Vargas Martin is Chief Executive Officer of PHractal.ca, a research and development company that offers innovative information technology solutions.
Tri-Council Agencies made up of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), provide a major source of research funding for post-secondary institutions in Canada. We are pleased to have received a number of grants since our inception, each demonstrating the quality of research produced within the Faculty of Business and Information Technology.
